Comfort in Gods Sovereignty

Watering the Tulips

11/30/2011

“All the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing; He does according to His will in the army of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth. No one can restrain His hand or say to Him, ‘What have You done?” - Daniel 4:35

In comparison to God, we are nothing.  Please don’t misunderstand; God has an eternal love for His people (Jeremiah 31:3).  This passage is not saying that God thinks we are unimportant.  On the contrary, He sent His only Son to die in our place.  That alone proves how important we are to God.  This verse has nothing to do with God’s love for us.  It is the power of God that is the subject of this breathtaking passage.  Man has no power whatsoever in comparison to God.  In fact, our power is so little compared to His that we are said to be “nothing”.

As humans, sometimes it is difficult to remember that God is in control.  Oftentimes when things look bleak, many seem to have the idea that Satan has taken over the reins.  However, this is not true.  God is the only Creator.  Satan is merely a creature.  The Lord of Heaven has declared “the end from the beginning, And from ancient times things that are not yet done, Saying, ‘My counsel shall stand, And I will do all My pleasure’” (Isaiah 46:10).  Do not be fooled, God’s plan is unfolding just as He has purposed.

God’s will is being done.  Let nobody misunderstand, God is Sovereign.  His will is done throughout all of His creation.  Who can question Him?  He alone spoke this world into existence.  He alone can speak with such authority.  God is not sitting on the edge of His throne wringing His hands hoping things work out the way He wants.  This is a bad way to illustrate our Heavenly Father.  As the Sovereign of the universe, “no one can restrain His hand”.  He pulls the strings!

God’s actions cannot be questioned.  He is right.  He is always right.  He has always been right.  He cannot do anything wrong.  The Bryant Brothers quartet used to sing a song entitled, “Right Will Always Win”.  That is absolutely correct because God is right and He will be successful in carrying out His plan.  God is not the Cause of sin.  He is, however, allowing men to sin at this present time.  And even that sin will ultimately bring about God’s eternal purpose.  What a great God we serve!

What is the benefit in believing in the Sovereignty of God?  First of all, it is the truth.  It is always beneficial for us to believe the truth.  Secondly, consider how we would feel if God weren’t sovereign.  What if we prayed to Him without any confidence that He could fulfill our requests?  What if we asked Him to save our lost loved ones without any assurance that He is able?  What if we trusted Him without any guarantee “that He is able to keep what [we] have committed to Him until that Day” (2 Timothy 1:12)?  Oh the blessedness of this doctrine!  We serve a God Who not only makes great promises to all those that believe, but is able to keep those promises!

Child of God, take a moment today to thank God for being God.
