The Glorious Gospel

Watering the Tulips

“Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received and in which you stand, by which also you are saved, if you hold fast that word which I preached to you – unless you believed in vain For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures…” - 1 Corinthians 15:1-4

Oh the glorious Gospel of Christ!  How we love to hear it proclaimed!  It seems obvious that this was the primary message of the Apostle Paul.  It only takes a casual reading of his writings to see his love for other truths.  However, the foundation for all truth is surely the Gospel – “that Christ died for our sins…that He was buried…that He rose again”.  This message is that old, old story that children of God have held on to since His work was promised to bruise the head of the serpent (Genesis 3:15).

God’s Word contains many blessed truths.  We have touched on many of these truths in our weekly articles and hope to teach on many more.  These are all beneficial to the child of God.  But, none are more precious than the work of Jesus Christ.  All is useless without a personal, saving knowledge of God’s Son and our Savior, Jesus.  Surely, God has chosen to save “by grace through faith”.  Jesus is the only Scriptural object of this God-given faith.

Paul tells these believers that this Gospel is that same truth “by which also you are saved.”  We completely understand that God did not have to ordain the Gospel as the means of salvation.  But, He is pleased to save through the message of Christ (1 Corinthians 1:21).  Without doubt, the Gospel is “the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes” (Romans 1:16).  Everyone that has been brought from death to life by the miraculous working of the Holy Spirit has been brought through the Gospel.  The Lord has even declared that He called us “by our Gospel” (2 Thessalonians 2:14).

Understand folks, without the movement of the Holy Spirit of God, the Gospel would fall on deaf ears (1 Thessalonians 1:4-5).  Man has no natural ability to understand the things of God (1 Corinthians 2:14; Romans 8:7).  However, when God opens our heart to the Gospel (Acts 16:14), it is that which is altogether lovely unto the believer.  Surely, Christ is to be treasured above all that has ever been or ever will be!  Christ is the greatest blessing mankind has ever known!  Oh, how we love to hear the Gospel proclaimed.

Child of God, pause immediately and thank the Lord that He providentially sent the Gospel your way.  Thank Him now that He opened your heart to believe it.  Thank Him at this very moment that you are trusting in Christ “for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure” (Philippians 2:13).
