Searching the Scriptures, As a Church

Watering the Tulips

These were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so" - Acts 17:11

What a rare find these days!  As I hear people talk about the reason for attending a certain church, it rarely has anything to do with what a church stands for.  Seldom do people attend church anymore because the pastor preaches the truth.  Folks don’t seem to care whether their teachers in the church are in harmony with the Bible.  Let us be aware, Paul warned us of a time when people would “not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers;  and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables” (2 Timothy 4:3-4).  Is this not our day?

Why do people choose a church today?  Perhaps the most common reason is for the youth program.  Let it be known, it is our desire to teach our youth.  We are not at all opposed to a solid Scripturally based youth program.  Surely, the Bible says, “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it” (Proverbs 22:6).  We must understand, however, that this is the Biblical way.  We are to teach children about the Lord and how He is to be worshipped.  This passage has nothing to do with keeping children entertained so they won’t leave the church.  Can we not see that many of the youth programs today are set up for entertainment purposes only?  If we must entertain the youth to keep them involved, is there not a bigger problem?

The Lord’s churches are supposed to be the “pillar and ground of the truth” (1 Timothy 3:15).  Churches were never set up by Christ to be activity centers.  It’s almost as though churches feel they must add in such excitement to compete with worldly attractions.  However, when a church uses worldly methods to draw people in, it will draw in the world.  Is it any wonder that many lost people today find themselves sitting comfortably through a “worship service” week after week?

Churches today need to return to the Biblical pattern.  We need to be preaching the Gospel of Christ and praying God would use it to convict sinners of their sin.  Surely, the Gospel is God’s ordained means of saving sinners (Romans 1:16; 1 Corinthians 1:21).  It is sufficient!  God’s way ought to be our way.  When we add things to God’s ordained pattern, we do nothing but corrupt it.  We cannot improve God’s plan of salvation!

Child of God, seek out a church which would be categorized as the Berean saints were.  Find a church whose goal is to preach God’s Word and stand for His truths.  Find a place that desires to worship God in Spirit and in truth.  Look for a congregation whose desire is to see souls come to know Christ – not a church which just supplies some new form of entertainment.  It’s not that Christians can’t have fun; surely we can and should.  We ought to be the happiest people on the face of the Earth.  However, we cannot allow worldly entertainment to replace true worship.
