The Sovereignty of God

Watering the Tulips

“Whatever the LORD pleases He does, In heaven and in earth, In the seas and in all deep places” (Psalms 135:6)

The Sovereignty of God – what a grand and glorious subject. How easy this attribute of God seems to roll forth from our lips. But, how difficult it often is for finite beings to even begin to understand it. Many who seem to understand the blessed Word that God has given us balk at the understanding of this wondrous subject.

Does the Lord do as He pleases? Our text verse says He does. What then of the preacher who often would say, “The Lord is trying this” or “God wants you that”? Can this idea exist along with the doctrine of God’s Sovereignty? If the Lord is doing as He pleases, then He is not “trying” to do anything. Is there any Biblical example where God ever “attempted” anything but failed to accomplish it? A thousand times no. But, Isaiah 46:10 does tell us that God declared “the end from the beginning, And from ancient times things that are not yet done, Saying, 'My counsel shall stand, And I will do all My pleasure’”. God does all His pleasure.

How does this affect our view of the Bible? Surely, it ought to give us great comfort. What kind of mess would we (personally) be in if God were not in control? Where would we be? How would we feel praying to a God that is unable to do much of anything? Obviously, our entire attitude towards our faith changes greatly if we get the idea that God cannot carry out the things that He desires. Why even pray if man can stop the will of God? Yet, we all pray to God for various things. We pray for healing of our friends and family because we know beyond a shadow of a doubt that He can heal them. We pray for the salvation of our friends and family because we know God is able to save them despite the depraved condition of their heart. If God is unable to save apart from “man’s permission”, why pray to Him? But, we do pray because we know He is all-powerful – He is the only Sovereign God – “Salvation is of the Lord” (Jonah 2:9).

Oh, how wonderful it would be if the majority today understood like the king of a pagan nation once did. After the Lord took Nebuchadnezzar low only to raise him up again, He said these marvelous words: “All the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing; He does according to His will in the army of heaven And among the inhabitants of the earth. No one can restrain His hand Or say to Him, "What have You done?" (Daniel 4:35). Not only is God in control, but we don’t have a right to question Him about anything.

Child of God, be comforted. The God Who spoke this world into existence is still in charge. Nothing can befall you unless He allows it to happen. Nothing is able to thwart His wonderful will. Be confident when you pray that you are praying to the all Sovereign Creator of the universe. He is more than able to grant your requests – no matter what!
